Lifestyle Disorder

Sri Vaidyanatha Ayurveda Hospital

Lifestyle disorders are a growing concern in today’s world, driven by unhealthy dietary habits, sedentary routines, chronic stress, and disturbed sleep patterns. Conditions such as high cholesterol and hypertension silently damage vital organs over time. Ayurveda recognises these as disorders rooted in metabolic imbalance and offers deeply effective solutions through personalised internal medications and classical Panchakarma therapies — targeting not just the symptoms, but the root cause.

Hypercholesteremia

Hypercholesteremia refers to abnormally high levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. It is one of the primary risk factors for cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, stroke, and atherosclerosis. In Ayurveda, this condition is understood as an imbalance of Meda Dhatu (fat tissue) and aggravated Kapha Dosha, leading to the accumulation of excess lipids in the body’s channels (Srotas).

Management is tailored based on the patient’s lipid profile investigation values — including LDL, HDL, VLDL, and triglyceride levels. A combination of internal herbal medications along with specific Panchakarma treatments is prescribed to effectively reduce cholesterol, improve metabolism, and restore lipid balance.

Panchakarma Treatments

Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis)

Vamana is a controlled therapeutic vomiting procedure that eliminates excess Kapha and accumulated metabolic toxins from the upper gastrointestinal tract. It is particularly beneficial in obesity-related hypercholesteremia, as it directly addresses the Kapha imbalance responsible for excess fat and cholesterol build-up.

Virechana (Purgation Therapy)

Virechana involves the administration of herbal purgative medicines to cleanse the liver, small intestine, and metabolic pathways. This therapy directly targets Pitta-related metabolic dysfunction, improves liver function, and significantly reduces lipid accumulation in the blood and tissues.

Lekhana Basti (Medicated Enema)

Lekhana Basti is a specialised medicated enema therapy formulated with herbs that have fat-scraping (Lekhana) properties. It works on the large intestine — the seat of Vata — and helps in reducing and eliminating deeply accumulated excess fat from the body’s tissues and channels, making it highly effective in managing elevated triglycerides and obesity.

Udwartanam (Herbal Powder Massage)

Udwartanam is a dry or semi-dry massage using specially prepared herbal powders (choorna). The vigorous upward strokes stimulate subcutaneous fat breakdown, improve lymphatic circulation, enhance metabolic rate, and reduce excess Kapha. It is an excellent supportive therapy for managing high cholesterol associated with obesity and sedentary lifestyle.

Treatment Outcome: With a consistent Ayurvedic protocol, patients experience a measurable reduction in total cholesterol, LDL, and triglyceride levels, improved HDL levels, better digestion, and sustainable weight management — without dependency on long-term allopathic medication.

Hypertension

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a chronic condition where the force of blood against the arterial walls is consistently elevated. Often called the “silent killer,” it increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and vision loss. In Ayurveda, hypertension is correlated with Raktagata Vata — a condition where vitiated Vata Dosha disturbs the normal flow and pressure of blood (Rakta) within the vessels.

Unlike conventional medicine which primarily focuses on suppressing blood pressure readings, Ayurvedic management aims to correct the underlying doshic imbalance — whether it is stress-driven (Vata), metabolic (Pitta), or lifestyle-related (Kapha). Initial and mild hypertension can often be successfully managed with internal herbal medications alone. In chronic and moderate-to-severe cases, targeted Panchakarma therapies are incorporated for deeper and lasting results.

Panchakarma Treatments

Shirodhara

Shirodhara is a profoundly relaxing therapy in which a continuous, gentle stream of medicated oil or herbal kashayam (decoction) is poured over the forehead (Ajna region) in a rhythmic manner.

Virechana (Purgation Therapy)

Virechana is administered to cleanse the Pitta pathways and reduce excess heat and pressure within the blood vessels.

Abhyanga (Full Body Oil Massage)

Abhyanga is a gentle, full-body warm oil massage using medicated herbal oils. The slow, rhythmic strokes pacify Vata Dosha, calm the nervous system, dilate peripheral blood vessels, and reduce overall vascular resistance — resulting in a natural lowering of blood pressure.

Treatment Outcome: The specific combination of therapies is always determined by the physician based on the patient’s clinical condition, constitution (Prakriti), severity of hypertension, and associated comorbidities. With a sustained Ayurvedic treatment plan, normalcy in blood pressure can be achieved successfully — reducing dependence on antihypertensive drugs over time and improving overall cardiovascular health.
